1.   BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT :

Nayagarh College, Nayagarh, was established on 09^th July, 1961. In the very next session i..e. from 1662, Biology as a pass subject was introduced with affiliation to Utkal University. Honours course in Botany was introduced from the session 1976 under the able leadership of Mr. G. K. Pattanaik. The initial strength of the Honours students was 16, which was later increased to 32 from 1991. At present the Botany department having Honours strength of 48.

04.       DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES :

A.         Academic :

Department of Botany is affiliated to Utkal University, is recognized in the Odisha State for excellence in teaching and research in major areas of Plant Science. The Department offers Graduate Course (B. Sc.) for three years duration for which admission is made through SAMS. There is semester system of examination along with regular internal evaluation as per the UGC guidelines. The faculty members are also receiving funds individually or in groups, from various extramural funding agencies. In addition to class room teaching, extramural lectures, seminars, elocution, completions and quiz tests are conducted in a periodic interval for training and overall skill development of the students.

B.         Non-Academic :

The students, staff and invited guests deliver lectures in the monthly seminars. The students visit RPRC (Regional Plant Resource Centre), ILS (Institute of Life Sciences) etc. located at Bhubaneswar for study tour and practical training. Several students of the Department have qualified P. G. entrance examinations of different Universities of the state and national level including JAAM/ ICAR entrance examinations.

The Department hosted National and State level conferences, workshop and organized the Annual Conference of Orissa Botanical Society in 1992.
