  1. BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT:-

The English Dept. has been there from the very day of inception of Nayagarh College, Nayagarh, and i.e.09.07.1961. Pass classes in English and other subjects were introduced in the year 1962, but Hons. Courses in English started in 1974. Students of the dept. always owe their success to their teachers since the teachers have tried to put in their best for the development of the dept. and the college as well.

Objectives:

Now-a-days, English has a special identity in the field of education. The objective of teaching English at Nayagarh Autonomous College, Nayagarh has two main aspects: i) Language aspect and ii) Literature aspect.

The main objective of teaching English as a language is to develop the skills of (i) Reading (ii) Writing (iii) Speaking and (iv) Listening, and to enable the students to analyze the elements of language and establish the appropriate relationship among linguistic components. The cognitive objectives include:to acquire knowledge, to diagnose the weaknesses of speaking English, to compare and illustrate linguistic components, to clarify the elements of English language, to understand the meaning of prose, poetry, story and drama by reading.

The various components of C.B.C.S. B.A. Hons. Syllabus of Nayagarh Autonomous College,Nayagarh offers the students an exploration of certain seminal texts that set the course of English Poetry, Plays, Literary Essays, Novels, Indian writing in English, Literary Criticism, American Literature, European and Indian Classical Literature, Women’s Writing, Postcolonial Literature, Popular Literature, Literary Theories and movements, World Literature and Principles of Translation from 14th to 21stcenturies, whereas C.B.C.S General English courses for all streams concentrate on enhancing the different communicative and soft skills focusing on the contemporary need for employability of the students.

The department also provides the students with a well-equipped Language-cum-Communication Lab. for enhancing the communicative, personality and soft skills of the students. The department classroom is equipped with ICT tools for creating an ideal atmosphere for the students to learn using the modern technological tools.

  1. Academic:Teaching English Literature and Language, Communication and Soft Skills development, Remedial Classes, Conducting Seminars and Workshops, Literary Quiz, Film Screening etc.
  2. Non Academic:Every year the department goes on picnic to places of Historical importance. It helps students to know more about the Ancient Culture and Fine Arts. Sometimes students and teachers go on study tours and visit different Universities of the country which widens their academic circumference.
