Zoology

1. Brief History of the Department :

 Nayagarh College, Nayagarh, was established on 9^th July 1961. In the very next session i.e. from 1962, Biology as a pass subject was introduced with affiliation from Utkal University. Honours Course in Zoology was introduced from the session 1973 under the leadership of Dr. Harisadan Maity as the first Head of the Department. The initial strength of the Honours students was 16, which was later increased to 32 w.e.f. from 1989 and now the honours strength has been increased to 48 w.e.f 2006. Under the leadership of Dr. Maity and with the support from Mr. Kishore Patnaik, the then Demonstrator, the class Room, Laboratories, Museum, Seminar Room and Store Rooms  were designed which to the date is one of the best in the state. Now our Department is running with seven approved teaching posts, four Demonstrators, One Artist cum Photographer, four Laboratory attendants and one AH&F post.

Another important achievement of the Department is pioneering research activity in the college under the leadership Dr. Maity, which not only inspired his younger colleagues in the Department but also other colleagues in Science faculty got inspired and started research activity. Three of our teachers including Dr. Maity completed their Ph.D. work from department. Dr. Ajay Kumar Patra who joined here as a young lecturer, later on left the college and presently he is positioned as Professor, Dept. of Zoology, Utkal University. Dr. Hemanta Kumar Behera, who started his career as a lecturer here later shifted to Berhampur and presently, he is the Professor of Zoology of Berhampur University. Dr Sunanda Kumar Pradhan who was the student as well as teacher of the department has been appointed as Reader in Env. Science in F.M. University.

The department provides teaching facilities in Zoology Hons (48 Seats), Generic elective(48 Seats) and Environmental studied(304 Seats).
