Department of Psychology

Nayagarh Autonomous College

DEPARTMENT PROFILE

ADDRESS:  Room No. 59, Nayagarh Autonomous College, Nayagarh

  1. BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT:
  • Year of Opening of the Department: 1962
  • Year of Hons course opening: 1974

Nayagarh Autonomous College, Nayagarh is one of the premiere learning temples of the state Odisha. This college was initiated with a scenic campus at one end of small town Nayagarh, with a few teachers, few subjects and small numbers of students. However, the subject Psychology draws the attention of the then educationists, of the locality and members of Governing Body since the inception of this Holy Institution. Consequently, the subject Psychology has got recognition from Govt. of Odisha and affiliation from Utkal University in the Year 1962 with Dr. Saroj Kumar Mishra as its founding teacher. He became the first Head of the Department with Dr. Kailash Ch. Panda as his assistant in the year 1965. In course of time, both of the teachers were replaced by Dr. Purnendulal Bose and Dr. Biranchi N Puhan as Dr. Mishra joined Utkal University, Bhubaneswar and Dr. Panda joined NCERT, New Delhi. This is worth noting that after two years both of them were accorded with Common Wealth Fellowship to pursue their Doctoral programme abroad. Further Dr. Bose and Dr. Puhan were again replaced by Dr. Binod Ch. Kar and Dr. Lalit Kumar Pattnaik owing to their placements in Utkal University. That is why this department was considered as a breeding centre of University teachers. It a glory for this temple of learning that the first USEFI full bright fellowship (in Psychology) was achieved by Dr. Binod Ch. Kar of Utkal University who happened to be a teacher of this college.

This Department walked ahead with Govt. Recognition for Honours teaching in the year 1973-74 under the leadership of Dr. Lalit Kumar Pattnaik the then Head of the Department, which was extended up to 32 seats in the year 1997-98. It is our pride that the Governing Body of the college has proposed for an extension up to 64 seats. Under the leadership of Dr. Niranjan Sia in 2011, this Department has grown from pillar to strength. To strengthen it further, Govt. of Odisha recruited three more learned faculty members through State Selection Board in 2016. As Dr. Sia got transferred, the responsibility of the Head of the department was given to Mr. Abhijit Panda. Under his leadership the department has become more vibrant with innovative teaching methodology and application-oriented teaching. The student progression to higher education has gone up tremendously since last three years.

The students of these glorious teachers have also succeeded in their career. One of them is Prof. Banamali mohanty, Ex Prof. & Head of Department of Psychology, Utkal Uiversity. Dr. Chitaranjan Mohapatra, Dr. Mrs. Kamala Mansingh and Dr. Satyabadi parida were also students of these esteemed department who have got reputation in the state.

Vision:

The department aims at providing skills and value-based quality education and establish the department as an example of academic excellence.

Mission:

  • To nurture students to become intellectually competent through scientific studies of human thoughts, emotions and behavior.
  • To provide solid knowledge about the theoretical bases of psychology and develop competency to carry their acquired knowledge into everyday interactions.
  • To cultivate human values, a sense of social responsibility, cultural sensitivity, and good citizenship behavior among the students.
  • To prepare students for successful career choices and further academic and professional development through post-graduate studies.
